Who'd Like An EU Referendum?

Well I certainly would and following McSnotty's 'I'll call it a Treaty' tactic so that he didn't  have to uphold his promise and Cameron's failure to keep his 'cast iron' one, it appeared that we were never going to get the opportunity to have our EU Referendum.

Fear not, there's still a chance that we can force the duplicitous, referendum dodging, Government dipshits into doing what WE want for a change. New Coalition legislation, under the heading of Political Reform, will ensure that any petition that secures 100,000 signatures will be eligible for formal debate in Parliament and that the petition with the most signatures will enable members of the public to table a bill eligible to be voted on in Parliament.

This has created a unique opportunity for all of us to both embarrass the government and hold them to account by way of The EU Membership Referendum Petition.

This is a very serious attempt to gather as many signatures as possible, not just here online but also around all the major cities in Britain by raising the profile and gathering more signatures via the EU Referendum Tour Bus.

Don't let the government shut you up
and to find out further details about the campaign.

Go on, you know you want to ;-)

Just done.

Sadly Gotty .. whilst I fully agree with what you say and would like nothing better than for Britain to abandon Europe entirely (except for trading purposes) ..

I have no more belief that this petition will be heeded any more than any of the others to which I've signed-up in the past were heeded ..

Nor that any referendum will be any more acted upon than the last one (also "offered" to us by a Tory PM) .. I voted "NO" in that one and was ignored & to date, I've never met anyone who will admit to voting "YES" ..

As things stand "they" can afford to ignore what we want & concentrate on what will benefit "them" .. and until that situation changes, we're pissing in the wind ..

That's a very fair point Cap'n, especially following hot on the heels of the 'Your Democracy' webshite sham. However, sometimes we need to remain positive in the face of all this apparent pretence to listen to our voices. If we say and do nothing then we certainly WILL be ignored and they'd like that. Aside from buring down the HoP I don't really know how to get their attention but I sure as hell don't want to give up without trying. I live in hope that if they were to end up with enough thorns in their side, then eventually one of them has got to hurt ;)

Done - thanks for publicising the petition.

Already have, but I'm afraid I would agree with CH.

GrumpyOldTwat said...

Thanks for giving it a go anyway, MD. Maybe this time we'll strike lucky ;)

Dioclese said...

Already signed it and would like to think it will happen, but I will believe it when I see it. Big society? We'll see....

Will you keep us posted on progress towards 100k names?

GrumpyOldTwat said...

I certainly hope to, John. The people that are behind this have promised to let me have regular updates about how it's going, along with dates and places where their tour bus will be appearing plus photos from events etc.

I'll keep you posted .... if I should forget, just give me a nudge ;)

Waste of time! But I've signed it and so WILL Mrs Ampers when I find her, I think she's in the East wing somewhere, but I haven't seen her for three days.

The reasoning behind my scepticism .. nay, cynicism is thus ...

After we were conned into joining the "Common Market" by the detestable Heath, we had a sham referendum .. which oddly enough gave Heath the very result he so desired (he knew the writing was on the wall for him & wanted another job) ..

So, having soundly defeated Heath .. Maggie continued with the Europe thing .. as did Major ..

When Labour came to power, one would have thought that as "Europe" was a largely an idea of the "hated" Tories .. they would have kicked it into the long grass, but they didn't .. One has to wonder why ?

Now we have the coagulation of all the clowns in Cameron & Clegg (both ardent Europhiles) .. there is about as much likelihood of debating, talking, embarrassing or shaming them into ditching the EUSSR .. as there is of me becoming the next Pope ...

Politicians of whichever stripe are all alike .. they all piss into the same pot .. the one which benefits themselves most ...

All signed up Gotty + page sent hither and yon for further sigs. Have to agree with the Captain however, they do indeed all piss in the same pot. At the same time. Willy waving bastards. And as for Cardinal Haddock - is that a puff of white smoke I see from the old chimbly?

Barking Spider said...

Same here, Gotty, I already signed and have the picture/link in my sidebar - I've signed every one of these petitions and I'm still no more hopeful that we'll get our referendum. There isn't enough doubt about the outcome for any Europhile government to allow one! ;) >:o

Gotty, as you know, Albion Alliance was/is all for this and I'll follow Barking here and sign everything going but it will be on the weekend.

I'd be OK as Pope .. provided they carry me round in that big chair .. especially after "Tot-time" ...  :-D :-D :-D

Why so cynical chaps? This is a libcondem goddammed Cleggeron petittion. It's inclusive, it's young,  its shiny, it's PROGRESSIVE, it's.... Oh bugger your right

GrumpyOldTwat said...

Yep, the bastards know we'll all say NO and that's not what THEY want...... so how's that for democracy? Shit.

GrumpyOldTwat said...

Blimey Ampers, I do hope Mrs Ampers hasn't done a runner ;)

GrumpyOldTwat said...

I can't fault you one iota Cap'n but I'm still determined to keep trying. My head says no but my heart keeps saying yes ;)

GrumpyOldTwat said...

Caratacus
Nice one and that Cardinal Haddock thing 'made oi larf'!

Cap'n
I'm beginning to think the Cardinal Haddock 'handle' kind of sounds good. I think it may well stick ;)

GrumpyOldTwat said...

Cheers James, thanks for the support and keep up the good work ;)

GrumpyOldTwat said...

LoL
Yep, same old agenda, just a shiny new coalition way of trying to fuck us all in the arse ........ again.

Bert Rodinsky said...

Yup but we will try, ya never know ;)

Billy Blofeld said...

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the petition.  I signed up earlier today.  I'd love the opportunity to make "Europe" shit its knickers via a bit of people power.

......someone has to sign up first - it may as well be us lot......

Angry Exile said...

Signed, sealed, delivered etc. now I'm just waiting to be completely ignored  :-D

The Coalition may be forced by their own legislation to have a debate on an issue that gets 100,000 signatures but where does it say they have to do anything about it? The debate is likely to be a handful of dissenting voices agains the balance of 650 authoritarian and paternalist pricks agreeing that they know what's best for 60+ million individuals. I'm as sceptical as, well, as everybody else here.

John R Smith said...

Even if the 650 expense criminals in the House of Conmen just go through the motions and then "decline our invitation" to hold a referendum we still win.

The PR aspect of having this legislation enacted then blatantly ignoring the will of the people will be stunning...the more so if the number of names on the petition is 1,000,001 rather than just 100,001. So we really, really need the maximum number to sign up to force them all to swallow hard and realise that THEY are the minority and that the people have spoken.

Spread the word!!

Email your MP and tell him/her what you expect of him/her when the debate happens.

GrumpyOldTwat said...

Well said John!

Trouble with that page is that it does not say who is sponsoring it.  Don't like putting info into anontmous sites.

rinky stingpiece said...

Signed; however futile.
You don't have to put real info in there - it's not like they tell us the truth or are going to pay any attention to it.
